He is today one of the most sought after professionals in his field having a wellequipped workshop on the Margao Quepem road. This is. truly creditable for one whose only experience with stone was when he was employed at a marbie works factory at Rajasthan.
Till date, Narendra has catered to a large number of cliénts:givinig them beautifully sculptored marble sofa sets, beds, tulsi pedestas, altars, small temples for homes besides engraving names on foundation and grave stones. There are many like me actoss the atate,” he mentions, adding that hé is the only sculptor to carve out faces.
He proudly claims that he can even write a person’s name on a small grain of rice. Narendra, who sources his marble and other stones from Rajasthan, has done pictures of Jesus Christ, Mother Teresa and Dhirubhai Ambani among others. He also undertákes contracts of flooring and fitting. His projects are on in many parts of the state which he monitors constantly.
In his free time, Narendra turns entertainer by playing musical instruments like the banjo, mouth organ and harmonium, which forms another obsession of his.
Few people can have it in them to be as gifted as Narendra hanswal. Narendra’s engravings include the last Supper, Jesus Christ, Mother Mary, Mother Theresa, Loard Krishna, Dhirubhai Ambani, Rajasthani ladies and a host of other gods, goddesses, personalities and paintings. “The Last Supper’ took me sixteen days to complete”, he says, “While a family tree involving twelve generations of the Sawwardekars took me four-and-a-half months to complete.
He has a remarkable tale to tell on how he stumbled into this profession. “Actually 1 have always had an inclination this proffesion. :Actually I have always had an inclination towards drawing, and pencil portraits were my forte. Although I have no formal training, asa a BA graduate, I pursued art as a hobby. On completing my education I entered the marbles industery and them made a foray into mining. One day on entering the Navelim cemetery, I was amazed to see a stone Portrait which has been brought from Paris. I was so wonderstruck on seeing it that I felt that if the person who had done it could do it so well why for Narendra. Most of his work is accomplished in five to seven days, but the time it taked longer . He works on black grannite and has been in the sculptingbusiess for the past nine years. However there is much more to Narendra that meets the eyes. A talented singer who has mesmerised many an audience, he is also skilled at playing the banjo and mouth organ.
